For 20 years Renovaré has been promoting a "balanced vision for spiritual growth" and a "practical strategy for spiritual renewal." These, respectively, are the well-known six Traditions of Christian life and faith that Richard Foster writes about in Streams of Living Water and Spiritual Formation Groups as described in A Spiritual Formation Workbook. I have gained immensely from both of these elements of Renovaré's message.

At the same time, in reflecting upon my own 20-year experience with Renovaré, I have found that it, in both published and event resources, has been about far more than only these two aspects of an intentional lifelong discipleship to Jesus.  Through various events and other resources Renovaré has emphasized the themes of:
• Grace - in all of John Wesley's understandings—prevenient, justifying, sanctifying
• Life in the Ever-present Kingdom of God - The Divine Conspiracy; thank you Dallas Willard . . . and Jesus and John and the prophets!
• The Six Traditions - Contemplative, Holiness, etc.
• Spiritual Disciplines - Prayer, Fasting, Study, etc.
• Relationships for Intentional Formation - Spiritual Formation Groups, spiritual friendship, etc.
• A Spiritual Formation View of Scripture - The Life with God Bible
• Interacting with the Great—and mostly dead—Devotional Masters - Devotional Classics, Spiritual Classics, etc.
• Discovering a Rhythm of Life - Chris Webb's recent "Explorations" series

While none of these will likely provoke sustained repentance in and of themselves, put together they present a way of thinking about and living into the Christian life that I have found nowhere else.  For me, they represent ends and means for a lifetime of becoming like Jesus.

Re: Looking at Renovaré from 30,000 Feet

Lyle:

Excellent start on your blog. Little bit heavy on marketing but people need to become aware of all the wonderful material that is out there.

As you go along discussions on apprentices direct experience in living in the Kingdom now would be a great addition.

Blessings,

Re: Looking at Renovaré from 30,000 Feet

While I have a lot to learn at putting the rhythms into practice, I have enjoyed reading several of the books written by Richard Foster and am very thankful for an ecumenical group that draws together the church of today (all denominations) and the historical church through classical writings and biographies. God bless you!

Re: Looking at Renovaré from 30,000 Feet

Hey Lyle – Always great to hear from you. Still getting great after shocks from your San Antionio Conference. What a magnificent occasion. Your perspective reminded me of the down side that was repeated so often in the early days. If I’m not mistaken these lines are part of what Richard brought back with him from his Celebration book tours. His heartbreak was that he found us “scattered not gathered”, “myopic rather than synoptic”, and “trying, not training”. San Antonio was a view of those conditions from 30,000 feet and fair to say things are changing, albeit slowly. I’m grateful that God is not in a hurry! The journey has been and is fantastic. Keep up the good work friend!! fred

PS: You may recall I expressed some disappointment that the great and hillarious exchange between Richard and Chris Webb at the conclusion of the closing session of the conference was not captured in the video of the session. I was delighted to see that Richard and Emile Griffin did a great narrative capture of that scene on page 81 of Conversations 7.2. f
